A fellow Viner and myself are having a debate on this subject, fearing this to be derailment on an article having to do with Europe investing in science, I took it upon myself to remedy this.
The nature versus nurture debate concerns the relative importance of an individual's innate qualities ("nature," i.e. nativism, orinnatism) versus personal experiences ("nurture," i.e. empiricism or behaviorism) in determining or causing individual differences inphysical and behavioral traits.
The phrase "Nature versus nurture" in its modern sense was coined[1][2][3] by the English Victorian polymath Francis Galton in discussion of the influence of heredity and environment on social advancement, although the terms had been contrasted previously, for example by Shakespeare (in his play, The Tempest: 4.1). Galton was influenced[4] by the book On the Origin of Species written by his cousin, Charles Darwin. The concept embodied in the phrase has been criticized[3][4] for its binary simplification of two tightly interwoven parameters, as for example an environment of wealth, education and social privilege are often historically passed to genetic offspring. The difference being that wealth, education and social privilege are not part of the human biological system, and so cannot be directly attributed to genetics.
The view that humans acquire all or almost all their behavioral traits from "nurture" was termed tabula rasa ("blank slate") by philosopherJohn Locke, and proposes that humans develop from only environmental influences. This question was once considered to be an appropriate division of developmental influences, but since both types of factors are known to play such interacting roles in development, most modern psychologists and anthropologists consider the question naive—representing an outdated state of knowledge.[5][6][7][8]
In the social and political sciences, the nature versus nurture debate may be contrasted with the structure versus agency debate (i.e.socialization versus individual autonomy). For a discussion of nature versus nurture in language and other human universals, see alsopsychological nativism.

Here is what was said so far.
Hey, I liked Sara Palin. I seen more good in her than any of the others. She was the only reason I voted for McCain. And I don't discount a Candidate because of 1 or 2 flaws .... that don't mean diddly crap when it come to Leading this country.
Like really now, what the hell does abortion, going to church, being divorced, getting laid, etc. have to do with the socio-economic future of America?
Illegal immigrants, dysfunctional public schools, rampant crime, selective prosecutions, political favortism and paybacks, criminals with more rights than non-criminals, dog-n-pony-show Court System, income redistribution to those who don't want to work, etc., etc. has been and is .... destroying the socio-economic future of America
And what are our elected Politicians doing? Six (6) people were shot dead in Chicago the other day, by perpetrators with pistols ...... while our Politicians were arguing about whether or not to BAN assault rifle ownership by all law-abiding citizens.
Cheers

Saaaammmm????

That's all Palin and the teabaggers had to talk about. Or are you being sarcastic?
Illegal immigrants, dysfunctional public schools, rampant crime, selective prosecutions, political favortism and paybacks, criminals with more rights than non-criminals, dog-n-pony-show Court System, income redistribution to those who don't want to work, etc., etc. has been and is .... destroying the socio-economic future of America
Criminals with more rights than non-criminals.....Yeah, Wall Street, Big banks, Big money all together.
Dysfunctional public schools...Are for profit private schools that much better?
Education experts seem to concur on almost nothing. Research in the field is so politicized and contradictory that you can find almost any study to support your view. If economics is a 99-1 science, education is a 1-99 circus.

Or are you suggesting like Scott Walker, "You can't teach these kids anyway so why bother." Hey I have a better idea, for all the uneducable..send them to labor camps in the most remote corners of the country.
Rampant crime...So if everyone carried a gun?? What was Palin's answer to this again??
Income redistribution...like Romney placing the tax burden on us working stiffs, and corporate welfare. As those who don't want to work [I agree] but let's see who also doesn't work in this country? Wounded/disable vets, children, the old and retired.
Illegal immigrants....OK...but that is not the real reason why Romney lost the Hispanic vote. Most legal immigrants feel.. If they had to get here legally then so should everyone else.
Dog 'N pony court system....And what did Palin and the republicans suggest to fix that?
And why again does a law abiding citizen need an assault weapon?
Sam since this wasn't posted by an individual Viner, derailing isn't going to break the COH laws here. So if you want to play ping pong with this, bring it on.
I mean Palin??? The reason you voted for McCain??? Have another one Cheers.

Viewer01, the Democrats DID NOT launch their Hate Campaign against Sarah Palin ... and her family members ..... because of the reasons you stated above.
Your comment of "Palin and the teabaggers" says it all.
Says that your nurtured mindset is one of a liberal, Socialist thinking, highly partisan Democrat and you didn't want a damn thing to do with the "fiscal responsibilities", etc., that were being promoted by the "teabaggers".
Thus, ya'll opted for a $16.5 trillion Federal Debt, soon to be a $20+- trillion Federal Debt, ..... which doesn't include the $50 trillion to $70 trillion in "unfunded liabilities", ..... that there is no way in ell that either of them can ever be paid off, ...... but only exacerbate further until anarchy becomes "the norm".
Viewer01, go back to #6.2 and re-read all of your comments ..... and after reading each one, ask yourself ..... "Really now, ... just why did I say that"?
Like it says in the "good book", .......... "Know thyself".
If you are going to delve into the subject of "How the human brain/mind functions" then "knowing thyself" is the primary prerequesite for doing said ....... simplly because .... if you don't have a clue as to "why you think the way that you think" ...... then there is no possibility of you ever being able to figure out, .... or even comprehend if told, ...... "why another person thinks the way that they think".
Cheers

Fiscal responsibility? Debt ceiling? W. Bush lowering taxes and starting 2 wars one completely unnecessary, and the other ran with complete incompetence. As for knowing thyself, I know myself very well. Do you? As for the teabaggers, I have some good ideas what makes them tick.
Viewer01, go back to #6.2 and re-read all of your comments ..... and after reading each one, ask yourself ..... "Really now, ... just why did I say that"?
Excuse me?!? Everything you posted, I can turn around and use it back on you.
I see below more people are taking interest in the subject, and this discussion is very inappropriate here. If you care to continue may I suggest Ed Schultz poll question.

Excuse me?!? Everything you posted, I can turn around and use it back on you.
Viewer01, I don't doubt for 1 second that you actually think/believe you are capable of doing said. That seems to be the "norm" for the younger generation who think they know everything about anything that is being discussed. But the truth is, it doesn't take "smarts" to do that. It takes a "learned" personality trait one aquires as a means to garner "peer approval" and/or to "counter" criticizing comments being voiced by one's peers. Even the Grade School "drop-outs" often become masters at that "game".
As for knowing thyself, I know myself very well. Do you?
"Yes", I do, Viewer01, I know myself pretty well. And that is due to the fact that I have been "studying" myself, and others, for like neigh on to 60 years. And I have learned a lot about myself as result of asking ........ "Why do I do what I do", ... "Why do I believe what I believe", ..... "Why did I react the way I reacted", etc. And the more I learned about the "things" that were directly responsible for my own "nurturing", ...... the more I knew and understood about the "nurturing" of other individuals relatiive to ..... why they do what they do, believe what they believe, etc.
Viewer01, I know for an absolute fact that it was "my environment" that nurtured me, and consequently, I know for an absolute fact that it was "your environment" that nurtured you. Given the aforesaid said, and your above "political" commentary, .... my guess is that there is a 95% probability tht you were born and reared in an environment that one or both of your parents were "highly partisan Democrat".
And the same applies to your "nurtured" Religious beliefs/preference, or the lack thereof.
Simply based on your commentary, I know more about you than you think I do.
and this discussion is very inappropriate here.
HA, Viewer01, must be you forgot about one of the "goals" that was stipulated in the article, to wit:
(seeded quote) In addition, the increased knowledge about how the brain works
